The Science Channel to Broadcast Documentary on CSB Dust Explosion Investigation Nov. 5, 2004, 9 p.m.

Washington, DC, November 3, 2004 - The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board's extensive investigation into a chemical plant dust explosion that occurred in Kinston, North Carolina, will be the subject of a documentary called "Failure Analysis: Dust Explosion" on The Science Channel this coming Friday, Nov. 5, 2004. The Science Channel is part of Discovery Networks, U.S., which also operates and manages the Discovery Channel.

Washington, DC, November 1, 2004 - The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) will hold a community meeting in Dalton, Georgia, at 7 p.m. on November 16, 2004, to discuss the April 2004 chemical release accident at MFG Chemical Inc. Over 100 families and businesses were evacuated, and 154 people were treated at a local hospital for chemical exposure.

Washington, DC, September 9, 2004 - The U.S. Chemical Safety Hazard and Investigation Board (CSB) has announced a public meeting to be held on Thursday, September 23, 2004, at 7 p.m. in the Kinston High School Performing Arts Center in Kinston, NC. In this meeting, CSB investigators will present their findings and report on the explosion and fire that occurred at the West Pharmaceutical Services facility in Kinston on January 29, 2003. The accident killed six workers, injured dozens of others, and destroyed large sections of the plant.

CSB Releases Safety Bulletin Warning of Dangers of Sodium Hydrosulfide (NaHS) in the Workplace; Outlines Safe Practices to Prevent Harm

Washington, DC, July 15, 2004 - The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) today released a Safety Bulletin that warns of the dangers of sodium hydrosulfide and recommends safe practices to prevent accidents when handling the chemical. CSB investigators uncovered 45 accidents associated with sodium hydrosulfide that have caused 32 deaths and 176 injuries since 1971. They noted, however, that accident data are incomplete and there may have been additional deaths and injuries attributable to the chemical. The Safety Bulletin is an outgrowth of the Board's investigation of a January 2002 accident involving sodium hydrosulfide that caused two deaths and eight injuries at an Alabama paper mill.
